Belarusian hammer throwers Ivan Tikhon and Vadim Devyatovsky cleared of doping charges by Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)
Our sportsmen have been given back their honourable titles as 2008 Olympics winners, following the announcement. In Beijing, Devyatovsky took silver while Tikhon claimed bronze.
On December 11th, 2008, the Disciplinary Commission of the International Olympic Committee decided to annul the results of the two Belarusian hammer throwers, due to their testing positive for excessive levels of testosterone. The Belarusian athletes denied the charge of taking prohibited drugs and soon took the case to the CAS. Hearing dates were rescheduled multiple times.

If the appeal had been rejected, Devyatovsky would have been disqualifi ed and prohibited from participating at the next Olympics while Tikhon would have received a two-year disqualifi cation.
Fortunately, on June 10th, 2010, the court ruled in the Belarusian athletes’ favour.
The special announcement reads that that the tests were taken and kept in violation of World Anti-Doping Agency standards, so their results are void. Additionally, the paperwork on the analysis did not meet requirements.

Women’s volleyball team of Belarus to continue struggle to enter 2011 European Championship At the qualifi cation round in Baku, they failed to earn direct qualification for the continental forum. In the final match of the second stage in Group A, Belarus lost to the host team — 0:3 and placed second in their quartet. Azerbaijan’s team entered the final of Euro-2011 directly whereas the Belarusian squad was given a chance to make it through to the European Championship in a two-round duel at the play-off stage (at home and an away match) against the team of Israel that also finished second in Group C (Ukraine won there). The matches are scheduled for September.
This year, the teams have played one another already in training camps, and Israel won several sparring matches. Our girls have tough matches ahead, and their coach Nikolay Karpol has to work hard with them not to turn our team into an ‘extra’.
Belarus’ team for the third time in a row tries to pave the way to the European Championship from the last stage of qualifi cation. They have played Slovenia two previous times, in 2006 and 2008, and were successful.
